Francis Wines Burton Francis, the founder of Francis Wines, shares a remarkable journey reflecting his life from boyhood in the rural town of Paarl, South Africa, through a successful international rugby career, culminating in a passion for wine. Overcoming significant hardships, including break-ins and playing rugby on rough fields, Burton developed a steadfast determination for change. His tenacity led him to excel as a fly-half in France until an injury ended his rugby career. During his time abroad, he became captivated by wine, particularly the Burgundian varieties. Pursuing an MBA in Wine & Spirits Business at the Burgundy School of Business deepened his appreciation for terroir, the influence of soil, and the connection to the land. Inspired by the beauty and complexity of Burgundy’s wines, he decided to establish his own brand upon returning to South Africa. Collaborating with mentor Kevin Grant in the Hemel-and-Aarde Ridge, Burton found a region with soil characteristics similar to Burgundy.
