 Nestled between Elim and Cape Agulhas, just 9km from the sea, lies the secluded Strandveld Vineyards, named after the belt of land along Africa’s southernmost coastline. This region, marked by severe winds, mist, and low temperatures, shapes the unique terroir of the winery. Inspired by early explorers like Bartholomeu Diaz, a group of wine enthusiasts sought out vineyard sites in 2001 despite the harsh conditions. They discovered a rundown farm near Cape Agulhas and began their adventure of planting and nurturing vineyards. Strandveld Vineyards, Africa’s southernmost winery, thrives in the tempestuous climate, producing cool climate wines shaped by constant Atlantic winds and rocky mineral soils. The spirit of exploration and pioneering voyages of Portuguese sailors lives on in their journey. Despite challenges, including fierce winds and cool temperatures, these conditions are the foundation for growing grapes that yield distinctive wines. Today, with 80 hectares of vineyards, Strandveld focuses on Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir, with smaller plantings of other varietals for blending, all crafted in their modern on-site cellar.
