If you are an avid lover of fine South African wine then you will know about Porseleinberg! Produced from a unique block of Syrah grown on the slopes of the Porseleinberg in the Swartland it has become a sought after wine by collectors the world over. The farm is owned by the Boekenhoutskloof Winery and is consistently highly rated by the British Master of Wine, Tim Atkin as one of South Africa’s finest wines.
“We pick the vintage,” says winemaker Callie Louw, whose 2020 Porseleinberg is the second lightest in alcohol he’s ever made at 13.6%. Fermented with 100% whole bunches using the submerged cap technique that transformed the wine in 2018, this is another scented, seamless stunner from Callie. Aged in large foudres and with 5% in concrete eggs, it’s a spicy, sappy, hauntingly elegant Syrah from a brutal site. According to Tim Atkin (MW) the wine offers “kelp, rose petal and fynbos aromas, juicy bramble and red berry fruit, fine tannins and a wonderful sense of energy.”
