Vriesenhof Pinot Noir 2015
Winery Location: Paradyskloof
Winemaker: Nicky Claasens
Background: Not only a legend in the rugby fraternity but also in the wine industry is Jan Boland-Coetzee owner and Cellarmaster of Vriesenhof Vineyards. His interest in Pinot Noir started over 38 years ago and since then he has been experimenting with different clones, planting on different sites, all of which has resulted in the elegant and sought after Pinor Noirs he produces today. A recent tasting of older vintages both from his Vriesenhof range showed how well they mature which has meant their followers often asking for more of these wines. Jan’s philosophy of producing good Pinot Noir starts with having ideal soils along with the right plant material and the correct support of wood (Jan prefers using 2nd fill barrels). The elegant 2015 is a blend of various Pinot Noir clones, and prior to bottling was matured for 12 months in 225l second fill (90%) and first fill (10%) Burgundy barrels.
Result: The wine is rich and juicy with strawberry flavours and fine tannins which are well-integrated right through to the long finish
