Winery location: Simondium
Wine of Origin: Elgin
Winemaker: Susan Erasmus with Karlin Nel
Background: Vrede en Lust, on the outskirts of the magnificent Franschhoek Valley, has released two new wines, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Syrah, to celebrate their recently launched Vinified by the Sun logo. The logo is inspired by the farms commitment to clean, renewable energy and environmental sustainability. This refers to the farm’s 220 KVA solar power generating system. This impressive installation of solar panels occupies an expansive stretch in their vineyards, and allows the farm to operate completely independent of the national grid in sunlight hours to run the cellar, restaurant, offices, wine tasting room and their hospitality division, even in the peak season.
The Red Shale Sauvignon Blanc, which is also part of the Artisan Range, is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes cultivated in the fertile red shale soils of Vrede en Lust’s Elgin farm, Casey’s Ridge, which specializes in the production of cool climate white varieties.
Result: The wine has a bright straw green colour with persistent aromas of green apple and Cape gooseberry. The flavours on the palate showed complex fruit with hints of freshly mown grass, with delicate minerality on the finish.
