Uitkyk Chenin Blanc 2013

uitkyk_cheninWinery location: Stellenbosch

Wine of Origin: Simonsberg

Winemaker:  Estelle Lourens

Background: Uitkyk Wine Estate, boasts one of the most beautiful Georgian neoclassical double story homes in the Stellenbosch wine lands which dates back to 1788. Always worth a visit but not only to see the homestead but to enjoy tasting their excellent range of wines as well as a 10year old brandy. A favourite is their Chenin Blanc and the current vintage, 2013, recently won a Gold Medal at this year’s International Wine & Spirit Competition, and was one of only 8 South African Chenins to receive this accolade. The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard which are 35 years old and trellised on a 3 wire hedge system which due to their age now look similar to a bush vine. Fermentation took place in both stainless steel tanks and 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels. Once fermentation was complete the wine was left on the lees for 10 months in both barrel and tank prior to bottling in January 2014.

Result:  Lovely whiffs of ripe guava and pineapple with subtle butterscotch lead you to a rich yet smooth flavour of tropical fruit with delicate hints of honey on the finish.
