Background: The Unfiltered collection from Fleur du Cap is a range of premium wines often considered as benchmarks in the industry. This month saw two new additions to the range, namely an unfiltered Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.  Cellarmaster Wim Truter is responsible for the overall production of the wines with the assistance of Pieter Badenhorst who now takes care of making the red wines, while Annelie Viljoen has recently taken over the overseeing of the vineyards. The grapes for the Pinotage come from low-yielding bush vines in the Bottelary and Agter Paarl areas. After regular punch downs in open-top fermenters, the wine was gently pressed in a small basket press and left to mature in barrel for 12 months with only 30% in new oak. “We found immense fruit concentration on the Pinotage and decided to mature the wine in only a small percentage of new oak. The balance was made up of old barrels, filled straight from the basket press,” adds Truter.

Result: Perfumed nose with aromas of mulberry and raspberry fruit and subtle, spicy oak. Delicious density of fruit and fine-grained tannins on the palate.
