Boschendal 330 Heritage Blend 2013
Winemaker: Richard Duckitt
Background: Boschendal, founded in 1685, celebrates its 330th birthday this year. To commemorate this achievement the farm has undergone many upgrades to its historic buildings and incudes their restaurants which are headed up by well-known chef Christian Campbell. A newly excavated Vegetable Garden in front of the revamped Werf Restaurant has been planted which will provide Christian with all the seasonal vegetables and herbs for his daily menus. Boschendal is of course renowned for its award winning wines and to celebrate this milestone, red wine maker Richard Duckitt, has produced a special blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot and Malbec. The vintage is 2013 and the anniversary bottle is reminiscent of the claret bottles of 19thCentury Bordeaux. The grapes, after being hand-picked and carefully sorted, were fermented in a combination of open top oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for 10 days, during which time there were at least 4 daily punch downs until the optimal level of extraction was reached. The wine then spent 18 months maturing in 1st, 2nd and older 300litre French oak barrels prior to final blending and bottling.
Result: The wine displays a dark velvet colour with intense aroma’s of cassis, herbal notes with slight whiffs of violets. The palate is rich and full bodied with concentrated black cherry and plum flavour with structured balance between the tannins and acid
