Pella The Vanilla Chenin Blanc 2013

pellaWine: Pella “The Vanilla” Chenin Blanc 2013

Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch

Winemakers: Daniël de Waal and Kyle Zulch

Background:  Daniël de Waal owner and winemaker (with the assistance of Kyle Zulch) of Super Single Vineyards produce wines under two brands namely Pella and Mount Sutherland. The Pella range (Pella means “place of gathering” which refers to the union of terroir and vines) are produced from selected vineyards in the coastal region of Stellenbosch. Daniël looked for older vines with minimum vegetative growth, therefore offering a good balance. “The age of a vine in itself does not guarantee quality wine; it must still be planted in the right soil. The soil is crucial. It must be well drained with a high clay content to ensure a steady, but moderate water supply during the hot summer months of the Cape.”

“Where old vines give more body and complexity, younger vines can also provide a wine with attractive characteristics such as freshness and purity of fruit”.

This Chenin is grown on old bush vines planted in 1971. The grapes are hand harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in 100% new American oak and this is where the lovely vanilla texture is born! After fermentation the wine was matured for 6 months in third and fourth fill barrels along with the lees.

Result: An elegant wine with lovely citrus and honeyed vanilla aromas which ease onto a palate of silky rich fruit flavours with a lingering finish
