Background: Well-known wine writer and formidable wine taster, Christian Eedes, has two annual cultivar specific competitions, one concentrating on Chardonnay and the other on Cabernet Sauvignon. The latter, The Christian Eedes Cabernet Sauvignon Report 2015, now in its fourth year and gaining momentum as wineries see huge value in single cultivar challenges. Each year 60 wines are selected and judged by a panel that is led by Christian and includes respected tasters Roland Peens and James Pietersen. For the first time in 2015, the 100-point scoring system was used and the results showed 13 wines receiving 90 points and over with the Waterford 2012 receiving the top score of 93 points. Says Christian “The best wines, or at least the wines this panel is inclined to reward, combine luscious fruit and textual generosity without sacrificing freshness”. The Waterford 2012 is made up of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Merlot; 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. After fermenting in stainless steel tanks the wine spent 19 months in French oak with 37% in new barrels and the rest in 2nd, 3rdand older fill barrels.
Result: The wine shows a dark velvety colour with shy earthy aromas and hints of black cherry. The palate has elegant balance with well-integrated tannins and a juicy silky finish.
