Neethlingshof Short Story Collection Maria NLH 2014
Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch
Cellarmaster: De Wet Viljoen
Winemaker: Monique Fourie
Background: In 2009 Neethlingshof Estate introduced their reserve tier of wines, The Short Story Collection, which are made exclusively from hand-picked grapes on the Estate. Drawing attention to Neethlingshof’s rich and varied narratives, the four-limited edition wines in the collection each focus on a specific aspect of the estate’s philosophy or history.
The Short Story Collection Maria 2014 is the name now given to Neethlingshof’s acclaimed Weisser Riesling Noble Late Harvest and honours Maria Magdalena Marais, the resourceful and feisty young widow who took over the building of the Neethlingshof estate’s manor house after the death of her husband, Charles, in 1813.
The grapes come from the south facing, dryland Weisser on the Hill vineyard on the Estate, and picked between 40 and 44 degrees baling just as the noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) has flourished.
Result: This wine has a deep yellow-gold colour with a bouquet of apricots, honey and almonds leading to a full rich palate with a long lingering finish.
When to drink: Now till 2024
Drink with what: A delicious and decadent wine to end the evening paired with warm malva tart served with a botrytis wine ice cream!
Expect to pay: R148.00 (375ml)
