Stellenzicht Golden Triangle Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Winery Location: R44 Between Stellenbosch and Somerset West
Winemakers: Guy Webber and Natalie Botha
Background: Stellenzicht is located on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Their vineyards lie in the heart of a prime wine-growing area, known as the Golden Traingle, which benefit from a cool climate having False Bay just a few kilometres away. This ensures that the grapes ripen slowly on the suitable terroir allowing for greater complexity in their wines.
Stellenzicht produces two tiers of wines, one of which is the Golden Triangle range, which includes three reds and a white (sauvignon blanc), all offering immense quality at affordable prices. I had not tried the sauvignon blanc for sometime but at a lunch recently with winemakers, Guy and Natalie, we opened a bottle of the 2014. What an amazing wine just packed full of wonderful tropical fruit flavours. The grapes are hand-picked from the oldest sauvignon blanc vineyard in the Triangle which were planted in 1985 and 1986. So old are they that several of the vines in the rows have died but the survivors are still producing intense succulent fruit! The real test for a well-crafted sauvignon blanc shows when older vintages are tasted. Guy opened a bottle from the 2005 vintage a few weeks ago and the wine was in perfect condition having developed an intense collage of fruit flavours typical of sauvignon blanc…..all this from some time spent in the bottle.
Result: The 2014 shows a bright pale straw colour with a tinge of green leading to lovely fresh aromas of tropical fruit and guava. The palate is full of gorgeous crisp tropical fruit and citrus flavours with a clean minerally finish.
