Solara Organic Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Vineyard: Houtbaai Farm, Mc Gregor
Wine of Origin: Robertson (Mc Gregor)
Winery: Rooiberg Winery – (organic cellar)
Cellarmaster: Andre van Dyk
Background: Entrepreneur and business woman, Pat Werdmuller, purchased Houtbaai farm in Mc Gregor just over 12 years ago. The 14 ha farm was run down and she immediately set about restoring the buildings, and replanting the orchids and vineyards. Her love for animals encouraged her to develop kennels and paddocks for stray and abused animals from the district.
Her dedication to the preservation of the environment inspired her to go organic, but not half-heartedly, as she has done everything required by the European organic auditors (no official South African organic legislation as yet) and so today her accreditation remains international. This meant she needed an amiable working relationship with a winery nearby to produce her Sauvignon Blanc organically.
She eventually struck up a partnership with Rooiberg Winery who in turn built a special organic wine cellar which meets the stringent international organic standards. This single vineyard 2014 Sauvignon Blanc has not only low sulphur content but alcohol as well at 12.5%.
Result: Fresh, well-structured wine offering nettly aromas with whiffs of ripe fig. This quietly leads you onto a lovely pulpy fruit texture on the palate with a lingering dry finish.
When to drink: Now – 2017
Drink with what: Tomato Tart with Bon Blanc cheese
Expect to pay: R80.00
