Fledge and Co Katvis Pinot Noir 2014
Wine of Origin: Elgin 60 percent and Klein Karoo 40 percent
Winery Location: Calitzdorp
Winemakers: Margaux Nel and Leon Coetzee
Background: Owners and winemakers, Leon and Margaux, have a natural, down-to-earth approach to their winemaking. The Katvis Pinot Noir is no exception and the Elgin grapes for this wine were hand harvested and foot stomped over three days prior to fermentation in old 300-litre French oak hogsheads. The grapes harvested in the Karoo were fermented in old open top stainless steel tanks for three days.
Once the fermentation of the two Pinot Noirs was complete the wines spent an extra six months maturing prior to blending and then bottled, unfined and unfiltered. Named after the resilient Katvis (African sharp tooth catfish), similar to the Pinot grapes which often endure hardy conditions, the Katvis is known for its ability to “walk” on land in search for water during extreme droughts!
Result: Lively, red cherry colour with subtle aromas of vibrant red berry fruit with hints of wild spice. The medium bodied palate offers savoury red cherry and ripe mulberry flavour entwined with balanced fruit acid and soft tannins.
When to drink: Now to 2019
Drink with what: Margaux and Leon have the right approach to this wine: “serve lightly chilled, decanted and accompanied by grilled duck breasts with a citrus and rocket salad and of course, with good company”!
Expect to pay: R106.50
