Baleia Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2014

baleia_bayWine of Origin: Cape South Coast

Winery Location:  Vermaaklikheid, near Riversdale

Winemaker: Jacques Geldenhuys

Background:  The Joubert family of Baleia Bay has been involved with several farming activities for many years including olive and olive oil production, breeding Brangus cattle and Dohne Merino sheep.

However, after realising their limestone rich soils would be good for grape production along with the cool on-shore winds from the coast nearby, they set about planting vineyards on approximately 1000ha.

Included in the mix are Shiraz, Pinot noir, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc.

The name Baleia is Portuguese for whale and the bay close by is a haven for the Southern Right whale.

Result: Tropically-fruited nose with scented lemongrass, the palate has great zing and freshness.

When to drink: Now – ideal for sundowners and picnics.

Drink with what: Summer salads, alfresco lunches and also perfect with goats cheese and green figs.

Expect to pay: R46.00
