Stellenzicht Plum Pudding Hill Syrah 2007
Location: R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West
Winemaker: Guy Webber
Background: Stellenzicht’s vineyards lie in a prime wine-growing area and benefit from having a cool climate helped by having False Bay just a few kilometres away. This ensures that the grapes ripen slowly on the suitable terroir allowing for greater complexity in their wines.
Stellenzicht is no stranger to producing award-winning Shiraz and have added a new wine to their portfolio, The 2007 Plum Pudding Hill Syrah, which is produced from a single vineyard found at the top part of the farm.
“Our wines are the products of our unique terroirs, farmed with care and made with subtlety. This is the very DNA of the Plum Pudding Hill Syrah,” says Stellenzicht winemaker Guy Webber.
Recently registered as Plum Pudding Hill, the vineyard got its name from local folklore where it is believed a trailer-load of plums once overturned near the site, making a horrendous mess.
The complexity of this Syrah stems from a vintage which Guy describes as close on ideal. “Ample autumnal rainfall translated into wonderfully even ripeness of fruit while the coolness of the ripening period resulted in this wine’s balanced structure and finesse.”
Result: The wine has a beautiful ruby-velvet colour which draws you to its aromas of ripe dark fruits with subtle peppery spice. The palate is full-bodied with rich ripe plum flavours and a silky soft texture on the finish.
