Anura Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

anura_cab_sauvWine of Origin: Paarl

Location: Simondium Rd, Klapmuts

Winemaker: Johnnie Calitz

Background: Described as the most exclusive wine competition in the world, The Novare SA Terroir Wine awards are indicative of South Africa’s ability to compete with the best internationally when it comes to wine of origin. The awards now in their ninth year, was founded by Marius Labuschagne, and offers a good representation of South Africa’s precious viticultural areas (Wine of Origin) right across the Cape winelands. At the ceremony this week the Anura Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 received the trophy for the Top Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine started its life in the cellar fermenting in small open-top stainless steel tanks with 20 percent fermenting naturally and the balance with commercial yeasts, after which the wine was kept on the skins for a period of time. Maturation for 22 months in first, second and third-fill barrels has resulted in an elegant wine with perfect balance.

Result: The wine is full-bodied with aromas of black cherry and spicy vanilla which leads to a delightful entry on the tongue of rich plum pudding and cassis which gently lingers on to a long finish.

When to drink: Now until 2018

Drink with what: Braised Oxtail with truffle mash.

Expect to pay: R112.00
