Kaapzicht Steytler Pentagon 2010

steytlerWine of Origin: Stellenbosch

Location: Bottelary Road, Stellenbosch

Winemaker: Danie Steytler jr

Background: This year the Steytler family of Kaapzicht Wine Estate celebrate 30 years of winemaking. Brothers Danie and George bottled their first wine on the estate in 1984 and it has been a family affair ever since. Since 2009 Danie’s son took over the responsibility for the winemaking while Danie overseas the overall production as cellarmaster. Other members of the family look after the export market, weddings and functions and national sales.

An invitation to a celebratory dinner recently gave me the opportunity to taste through their latest vintages while enjoying delicious food prepared by Etienne Bonthuys.  I have a preference for the Kaapzicht reds and especially from the flagship Steytler range. As the chilly evening wore on I snuggled up to a bottle of the Steytler Pentagon 2010. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (72 percent), Merlot (20 percent) and Malbec (eight percent) which were vinified separately and then allowed to mature for 24 months in 100 percent new French Oak barrels before being blended prior to bottling.

Result: Classically styled with red and black fruit aromas as well as spicy oak. The wine is full bodied and well balanced on the palate with good fruit definition, fresh acidity and fine tannins.

When to drink: Now till 2020

Drink with what: Ostrich Fillet with a red wine reduction, tagliollini and bone marrow

Expect to pay: R326.00
