Ken Forrester Renegade 2010

kenWine of Origin: Western Cape

Winery: Ken Forrester

Location: Stellenbosch

Winemaker: Ken Forrester

Background: This year Ken Forrester celebrated his 21st vintage and from humble beginnings in 1994 where he bottled his first wine, a Chenin Blanc, he now produces 16 wines within three ranges.

When he is not making wine he travels extensively both locally and abroad promoting his products as well as being an ambassador for South African wine. Often known as a renegade for his outspoken views on our wine industry and being a firm supporter of the screw cap closure, it was therefore fitting to have named his intriguing red blend of Shiraz (54 percent), Mourvedre (29 percent) and Grenache (17 percent), Renegade.

Now in its fifth vintage, it was one of the first Rhone-style blends made in South Africa! The wine was fermented in open tanks with regular gentle pump-overs, after which the wine was matured in second and third fill barrels for 18 months prior to bottling.

Result:  The 2010 offers lovely attractive spicy plum and earthy aromas which guide you to a palate of rich and savoury plum flavours, along with hints of nutmeg all culminating with a long lingering finish.

When to drink: Now until 2018

Drink with what: Spicy barbecued lamb kebabs but it will be happy with roast venison.

Expect to pay: R115.00
