The persistent heat and drought, and in some areas vineyard fires, over the start of the harvest season has resulted in several parts picking earlier this year, however many wineries are reporting that what they have picked so far the quality is good but quantity down!

With the weather patterns changing around the world this is having a negative effect on yields over the past years. The 2018 vintage in the Cape, could be one of the smallest ever making the future look bleak for wine lovers as it could result in a short supply which in turn would mean we may have to pay more for a bottle of the good stuff. Picking continues for the later ripening varieties some of which are picked by hand and the others with automated machines.

Due to the extreme temperatures picking is usually done in the early hours as vineyard managers rush their grapes into cellars while still cool from the night air.
