Wine of Origin: Constantia

Background: Constantia Glen, a magnificent wine estate perched high on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg, are known for their superb cool climate wines including their Sauvignon Blanc, a Bordeaux styled white of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and two Bordeaux styled reds which are all highly regarded in the Platter South African Wine guide receiving between 4 ½ star and 5 star ratings each year.
Shaped by the vineyards’ individual location just below Constantia Nek, the close proximity to False Bay, varying site specific vineyard blocks, soil types and clones give Constantia Glen wines their unique character. Choosing not to rush the art of winemaking, the winemaking team headed up by Justin Van Wyk along with his assistant, Megan van der Merwe, lean on time-honoured techniques and technical precision to gently coax the aromas from the grapes, resulting in wines of great complexity and uncompromising quality, with great ageing potential.
The two red blends produced, are the Constantia Glen Three and Constantia Glen Five. They have been named as to the number of Bordeaux varieties that make up the blend.
Last week Justin and Megan presented a vertical tasting of their wines and of particular interest was seeing the development of the Constantia Glen Three. The Three is Merlot driven and the 2013 has 59% along with 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc. After fermentation the wine was matured in 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill barrels for 17th months and prior to bottling was un-fined and lightly filtered which compliments the rich tannin structure.
Result: Full bodied complex wine which shows off its three expressive Bordeaux varieties with scents of subtle tobacco and plummy, blackberry fruit. The 2013 has excellent expression of fruit on the palate offering intense juicy black fruit tweaked by the lovely freshness of red cherry. The balance between richness and freshness is exceptional with long lingering fruit flavours and just a hint of spice from the oak in the background.

Drink with what: Barbequed grain fed fillet of beef with mushroom, rosemary and red wine sauce.
