The continual heat in the Cape during the picking season over the past couple of months, with little or no rain, has resulted in some speedy picking once the winemakers are happy with the correct phenolic ripeness and sugar levels of the grapes. Reports from different climatic regions are mixed with some areas very happy with the vintage and others happy with the quality but way down on the quantity compared to last year’s harvest. Vines are reasonably resilient with some managing to survive due to the retained moisture from the pre harvest rains late last year. Not all the red varieties have been harvested but the earlier ripening varieties which are now fermenting in the cellar are showing promise for an excellent vintage.

At the same time last year we wrote on the tragedy brought about the fires in the Western Cape which sadly repeated itself in parts of Stellenbosch, Elgin and Constantia earlier this year. As a result of these tragedies a magnificent book, The Cape Aflame – Cape Town’s Dance with Fire has been produced. The book is a photographic story which shows what devastation the fires caused and records the bravery of the fireman and volunteers who assisted during these unforgettable moments of time.
