Background: The vineyards on the Jordan Wine Estate form part of the Stellenbosch Kloof ravine which encompasses varying elevations on which they have planted both red and white grape varieties suited to specific sites. Besides having suitable soils the Kloof benefits from the maritime influences of False Bay close by which offers a cooler ripening season compared to further inland Stellenbosch farms. On a recent visit to Jordan a couple of weeks ago, owner Gary Jordan, showed us his recently acquired land where they will be extending their vineyards and the proposed new plantings will include the Greek variety Assyrtiko in honour of his business partner and wife, Kathy!
I have always been a fan of their excellent wines and especially the Estate Merlot which remains one of their most popular reds in the range. So it came as no surprise when they introduced its baby brother Merlot with no added sulphur. Gary points out that working with healthy grapes makes it so much easier to make a wine with no added sulphates. The process has allowed for a juicy easy drinking red wine which can be drunk at any time….and great, of course, for sufferers of too much sulphur as well!
Result: Subtle aromas of ripe berries and cherries are underlined by delicate oak spices. A fruity yet mouth-filling wine with gentle tannins.
