Tragedy and devastation struck the Western Cape’s Southern Peninsular during the first week of this month with runaway fires that raged through Cape Point, Hout Bay and the wine region of Constantia. Scores of brave firefighters both on the ground and in the air bravely battled day and night to douse the fires never knowing when the unpredictable Cape winds would change direction. Tragically, one of South Africa’s top Helicopter Rescue pilots, Colonel Willem “Bees” Marais, died after his helicopter crash landed while attempting to douse fires at Cape Point Reserve.
The efforts of these brave men and women helped to save the lives and properties of the affected communities and farms from destruction. Reports from the vineyards in Constantia that most were relatively unscathed but at Cape Point Vineyards 10% of their vineyards were destroyed. Fortunately with the harvest being earlier this year most of the grapes were in cellar but several red varieties were and are still to be harvested. The winemakers and viticulturists will now determine whether the smoke from the fires will have tainted the last of the grapes still to be picked.
